This job began because of damage from a slow leak in the intake valve to the toilet of a little-used guest bathroom.  It went unnoticed for a long time and resulted in a rotted floor, wall damage and damage to the ceiling of the bathroom one floor below. Though the bathroom had not been used much in the past, an elderly parent was scheduled to move in with us and this was to be his bathroom.  So we needed it fixed -- and fast.  We also wanted to retro-fit it for safety.  We also need to prep an extra bedroom by installing a ceiling fan/light, putting in an extra outlet and painting.  



GOODFELLAS PROJECT MANAGER:  It began with Project Manager Danny Gold, who is one of the most responsive individuals I?ve ever dealt with.  It didn?t matter what time of day (or night) I sent a text with a question or a comment; he?d respond immediately.  That kind of accessibility goes a long way toward easing a customer?s worries about a job ? especially a customer like me,  who hasn?t done many home improvement projects.  I can't say enough about this guy.



OTHER GOODFELLAS PERSONNEL:  "Julio" was the foreman for the job, and "Samuel" was the person who performed the greatest amount of the work.  Though his English was limited (and I do not speak Spanish), Samuel was nevertheless very helpful to me in making choices both functional (e.g. where to place the grab bars) and cosmetic (e.g. where to place the tile accents and how to arrange the floor tile).  His tile work, in particular was beautiful.   He is an artist.



DEMOLITION:  The first step was demolition.  Most of this had been done by another firm (one of those water damage firms).  Still, we decided to replace our old tub and shower (which had not been damaged) with a shower only, which would be safer for an 83-year-old parent to get in and out of.  So the first day was the noisiest, as the old tub, shower doors and tile had to be removed.  Construction dust and grime is a given when remodeling, but GoodFellas put down drop cloths that covered two flights of stairs and our upstairs hallway, to help protect things.  They also pulled it up at the end of each day, so it didn't feel like a construction zone overnight.



  



[Recommendation to others: if you have paintings hanging on the opposite site of the wall from which tile must be removed, take the paintings down because the vibration may cause them to fall.  One of ours fell but was undamaged.]



CONSTRUCTION & PLUMBING:  After removal of the tub and tile, we were left with an empty room.  Julio and Samuel built out the new shower, including a built-in bench (Danny's suggestion and a good one).  They relocated the drain from a spot near the wall (as used in a tub) to a mid-point between the bench and the wall (as used in a shower).  They plumbed a new seat for the toilet (which we did not replace) and the hardware necessary for our new shower head and controls.  Samuel and I put a lot of thought into where to place the grab bars, and he made sure they could be firmly secured in those spots. They replaced the drywall in the area where it had been removed due to water damage.  The hardy board went up in the shower and then came the hot mop to seal the shower area.  



ELECTRICAL:  The electrical work in the guest bathroom was well done.  At Danny?s recommendation, we added a recessed light over the shower (great idea) and we replaced the fan with a new, quieter model.  Per our request, they expanded the number of outlets in the bath from two to four.  A new light fixture was installed.  We put a new fan in the downstairs half bath, as well.  I was initially concerned about the noise of the new fan in our downstairs bath, but Danny consulted two electricians about this and it was ultimately determined that the positioning/distance of the ductwork (pre-existing) contributed to that.   That was yet another illustration of Danny?s responsiveness.



The electrician also installed a new ceiling fan/light and installed an outlet in the closet.  The latter made it necessary to cut into the drywall along one wall and part of the ceiling.  I've worked with electricians who managed fewer cuts when doing this but when all was said and done, these were patched and painted over.



Communication with the electricians was a bit of a challenge. Neither of the two people really spoke much English.  Still, they arrived with an understanding of what needed to be done.  They did not cart away old materials (boxes, the old ceiling fan) the way than Julio and Samuel carted away other old material and boxes.  (This was important to me, in part because I live in a condo and we try to avoid loading up the dumpster we all share with construction waste.)  Looking back over the experience, the non-removal may have been due to the communication problem.  I asked if they would do this and they shook their heads ?no.? I don't think they'd have knowingly refused, so perhaps they were indicating they did not understand. So I had to disassemble the large



old fan, myself, in order to discard it.  



We had one technical hiccup with the electrical work.  The electrician did something to the outlet in our master bath (which related to a new outlet placed in our extra bedroom), after which it no longer worked.  But we reported it to Danny, and the electrician returned and put in a brand new outlet, so I was very happy with the resolution.



TILE WORK, GRAB BARS:  The tile work turned out to be the hallmark of the bathroom remodel.  Samuel was very helpful to me and discussed all of the details ahead of time, such as what tile to use for the recessed shampoo/soap cubby, the height at which to place the accent tiles and whether to use tile or wood as a baseboard.  His workmanship was just beautiful.   The grab bars are super-secure and we're very pleased.   



DRYWALL AND PAINTING:  Both bathrooms involved the installation of drywall, then wall texture and finally painting.  The drywall work and painting in the guest bathroom was excellent.  The painting of the extra bedroom was done very well ? and the workmen completed that job without our having to clear the room (challenging for them and a break for us because we needed to get some movers in to help us).  The painting of the half bath downstairs was good ? I?m pleased ? but would not rate it as highly as I did the remodeled bathroom.  



TIMELINESS, DOWNTIME (NONE!):  I must also comment upon the speed with which the job was done.  Work began on 11/6/14 and was finished on 11/21/14!  There was progress each and every day (zero down days) and I posted a photo diary of the progress on Facebook.  My friends marveled at the speed with which the transformation was completed.  



SHOWER DOOR:  The shower door was installed by a separate provider, after GoodFellas had completed the job.  It's a beautiful door that complements the other hardware in the bathroom.
