"Cal Preserving did a great job on our very difficult to install Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) deck. I would definitely use them again."

"Revival Painting work was absolutely perfect. Jonathan, the owner, was more than reasonable with the cost of my project. He showed up on time, when he said he would. He got the job started and was on the job to the finish. He helped me pick out the right stain for my deck as I was having a problem picking one and was so on target with the color. In finishing up, Jonathan, and his worker, did a walk through of the deck to make sure it was complete, did touch ups that were needed and completed the project on time. My deck looks wonderful! I'd hire him again in a heartbeat! Thank you Jonathan and Revival Painting! Quality work. Value extraordinaire!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

No, it is not okay to paint over rotted wood. Painting over rotted wood will not address the underlying issue and can trap moisture, leading to further decay. Properly addressing the rotted wood by removing and replacing or repairing the damaged areas is necessary before you can even consider painting.

Generally, these steps are included in exterior house painting:

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Adding a second coat

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Deck staining or painting safeguards wood against the elements through its protective layer, enhancing decay resistance, prolonging structural integrity, and improving visual appeal.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.
