"Review from perspective of first time home owner/buyer who had a long list of projects and home improvements that required a general contractor. I recently purchased a two bedroom home in Mill Valley and after moving in quickly realized that there were a littany of projects that needed to be completed in order to make my new home more comfortable and presentable. I received 3 referrals for different general contractors from friends/family and went on the meet and receive estimates from them. I decided to go with Fred and FSP general contractors for my initial set of priority projects based on my favorable impression of Fred, his fair and straightforward estimates, and clear communication of timelines to both start and complete the initial projects. I decided to continue to work with Fred/FSP for my 2nd/3rd traunch of projects based the high quality of work performed during my first set of projects, adherence to estimates and timelines, and ease of communication during the process. In particular, I appreciated Fred's flexibility with my evolving priorities and his availability to meet/speak/text about questions and/or recomendation pertaining to ongoing work. The work that Fred/FSP did and continues to do for me was diverse but probably representative of the type of work many people are interested in: 1. Remodling of bathroom including istallation of new fixtures and replacement of original tile. 2. A tricky and unusual rebuild of a fireplace and mantle. 3. A custom designed/made concealed wiring scheme for tv mounted over the new fireplace mantle. 4. Replacemant and installation of lighting throughout house. 5. A full review, recomendation (s), and upgrades for electrical integrity of the entrie house. 6. A long list of random tings I thought of along the way! I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with Fred/FSP and will continue to work with them for all home improvement projects moving forward. I highly recommend this company based on the honesty/integrity of Fred and his crew, the adherence to reasonable estimates and timelines, and the high quality of all work performed."

"We hired McCoy Construction to help resize a few of our built in cabinets and they did a great job! Every member of the team was super friendly and were incredibly communicative. In the end the new additions to the cabinet spaces all looked super natural and functioned perfectly. You can hardly tell what they added versus what was already there even though finding the correct coloring proved to be very difficult. All in all, I would highly recommend McCoy for whatever home-improvement projects you might have."

Customers say: Quick response

"I was very pleased with this contractor, his crew, and the work performed. The contractor was responsive, punctual, and worked around adverse weather conditions. His employees were polite, friendly, and left the work area spotless upon job completion. All material was stained before installation and screwed into place, guaranteeing a finished product that is solid and well protected. This contractor provided an estimate within 7 days of initial inspection and completed the deck project in 2 weeks from start of construction! I have never had or heard of this type of service from any general contractor in the area. We will definitely use him again for any size project that comes along."

"Ybarra Professional Builders did 2 big plumbing projects on my house and property. Not only did they install a brand-new main water line to replace the old leaking galvanized steel pipe, but they also re-piped my house's plumbing as it was also made from that same rusting out galvanized steel. I also had some other major work done by them at the same time (tree removal and sprinkler repair) but since Home Advisor asked for a specific type of project for this review, I will only review the plumbing projects. Vlad was the project manager for all of these projects. He coordinated all of the sub-contractors' work and got the projects done in a timely manner. There were none of the time issues that I had heard about with other contractors, such as waiting weeks between one phase of a project to get the next one started-after one phase was done, the next phase would begin with no more than a day or two in between. He was very pleasant and very patient with my many questions and concerns and kept me up-to-date with what was happening. The project that I most dreaded, the house plumbing re-piping, was not as bad as I thought it would be, to my great relief. All of the people who I dealt with at Ybarra were pleasant and professional, from the sub-contractors to the office staff. I think the quality of the work performed was very good. In the additional clean-up phase, the holes in the drywall where the plumbing had been re-piped were patched and painted, and the concrete where the driveway had to be cut to replace the main water line was re-poured. This portion of the project was available as an additional cost, but the workmanship was very good. I had heard and read many horror stories about dealing with contractors so working with this group was a pleasant surprise. Thank you, Vlad."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.
