"Mark at MW electric was outstanding. He took a difficult challenge and did a super great job installing a new transfer switch to my house electrical panel, which will allow me to hook up a generator and run my house if there is an electrical outage. I couldn't be happier, and he is great to work with and reasonable. I will hire him again."

"Robert did an amazing job installing several 3-way Leviton WiFi smart switches in the stairwell of my home. He was very professional, detail oriented with the install, and did a great job sharing the info with me on how he set things up! The work areas were all cleaned up and he took his time to make sure everything was pristine. I definitely recommend Robert if you’re looking to have any electrical work done. Thank you!"

"We hired ADI Electrical on 2/5/24 to do 5 different electrical jobs on our home, replace a fixture under the cabinet in the kitchen, supply and install floor outlet in the family room, supply and install new outlet for the garage ceiling, remove outlet in an old furnace closet, install new doorbell by move existing doorbell transformer to attic and fish ethernet cable from attic to junction box on side of house. Alvaro gave us a detailed estimate on 1/26 and we like their website which is very thorough and precise in its presentation. Michael the administrator in the office was very helpful in setting up appointments and anything else that was needed. Santo, Alex and Sam Adi came out on 2/6 to do the electrical work and we are extremely pleased with their attentiveness to detail and accomplishing everything that needed to be done. All the areas were cleaned up and everything was left spotless. We are very satisfied with the electrical services, and we highly recommend them."

"The two techs sent in to install my manual transfer switch did a great job. Instead of proposing crazy ways of installing the switch, they figured out how to do it without trying to upsell the project. Thanks"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit
