"Jeremy and Joe from Nichols Electric were amazing. They came out the same day, designed and installed lighting and outlets for my garage and exterior. They even came back and moved some outlets for me in my new house. They were extremely pleasant to work with and helped me understand every step of the process. I'm definitely going to use them again on my next project."

"Very difficult job but went smoothly.  Time consuming due to terrain.  Went above and beyond  with moving the existing lights to an unlit portion of driveway.  Used again with an Angie's special for small work on rear lights installed at new construction."

"Not a lot of upfront details given on the colors of poles, size of poles, look of lights etc. Team that came out was not nearly as experienced as the owner Tommy. However, they ended up turning out very well. Communication about design could have been better for the large sum we paid to hang bistro lights."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.

There are tons of different types of landscape lighting available, including the choice between solar and wired, incandescent and LED, and a variety of colors. Specific types of lighting include:

  • Pathway lights: $50–$150 per fixture

  • String lights: $50–$150

  • Low-voltage lights: $90–$150 per fixture

  • Porch lights: $65–$250 per fixture

  • Floodlights: $75–$250 per fixture

  • Downlights: $100–$400 per fixture

  • Uplights: $100–$400 per fixture

  • Security lights: $ 350–$500 per fixture

  • Lamp posts: $400–$1,100 per lamp post

The majority of potential burglars are amateurs looking to make a quick buck after breaking and entering. By installing motion-sensor lights, alarm systems, and security cameras, throughout the home, there’s a good chance you will deter crime on your property.

Inspect for burnt-out bulbs, secure connections, and protect from water exposure to maintain functionality.

While most general electricians can repair lamps and light fixtures, it is often better to hire a lamp repair specialist. Many electricians prefer larger jobs, such as fixing electrical systems or relocating fixtures, and may not offer lamp repair services due to the small scale of the work. Additionally, some lamps, particularly antique models, require dedicated expertise that a general electrician might not have. A lamp repair specialist will be familiar with various types of fixtures and can provide a more dedicated service. If you have already hired an electrician for a larger project, you can ask them to look at your lamp, but for a standalone repair, a specialist is typically the best option.
