"My experience with Zero Electric was great! James was extremely knowledgeable about home generators and walked us through several pricing options that fit our budget. Their work was clean and efficient and I will definitely be hiring him in the future for our electrical issues."

Small jobs welcome

"Very satisfied with upgrading a 100amp residential electrical panel to 200amp. Benjamin and his crew came out to review a 40+ year old panel and his bid laid out everything he thought needed to be done. His bid was similar/competitive with the other two I received, but as with anything like this, some extra costs did materialize after discussions with Edison and City of Long Beach; he explained all of these and got my sign off on everything he did/added, and at the end he kept the extra costs as low as possible. Benjamin’s communication was great and he tried to explain everything to me - the novice. During the “rough inspection” the inspector said “this is probably the cleanest and most organized residential panel project I’ve ever seen”. They also did a nice job of covering the old service mast and panel/meter box and cleaning up after the project. Orozco's will be coming back for some other work inside my house and I will probably eventually bring them back for some upgrades"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.

Generators are usually sized by running watts and starting watts. Ideally, you’ll want a generator that can offer both the necessary running watts and starting watts for everything you need to power without going beyond 90% of its capacity. Calculate your home’s electrical load based on the breakers in your home or adding up the appliance and lighting needs of connected rooms.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

It’s usually better to repair your generator if it isn’t working properly, as it will typically be much more affordable and should yield similar results. Generator repairs cost around $300 on average, while installing a new whole-house generator costs around $5,000 on average. The only exception is if you know your generator is reaching the end of its useful life, usually between 30 and 40 years. If you have an older generator, you could face multiple repairs in the coming years, which might mean that a full replacement will be more cost-effective over time.
