General Contractor / Handyman / Master cabinetmaker (Shasta and Tehama) Finding a skilled tradesman can be a tough job, especially one that will return your call or show up when promised. I’ve lived in Tehama County 1989, and I'm well versed in all aspects of residential and commercial construction. I can build you custom kitchen cabinets, a bookcase, a library, hang your blinds, patch drywall, install ceiling fans, install flooring, and fix just about anything related to your home. If you're an owner/ builder I can oversee your project, handle the permit & inspection processes and interact with the sub-trades for a fixed fee, which will save you money...AND I'd rather work at your place than my own! My hourly rate is $65 and I've got all the tools and skills for any job you're facing. If you need help with any home repair or building issues call me, I'll be happy to chat with you about your project at no cost. When it's time to get to work, I’ll actually show up, it's amazing!

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

Yes, sanding cabinets before you stain them helps the new stain better adhere to the surface. If you’re adding a darker stain to previously stained wood, you only have to sand them lightly enough to remove any finish and rough up the wood to improve adhesion. On the other hand, if you’re trying to stain wood that is a darker color or that has paint on it, you need to sand down to the original wood, or the color will show through the new stain.

Cabinets come in diverse styles, including the simple, clean-lined shaker, flat or raised panel, and inset cabinets which sit flush with the cabinet frame. Additionally, cabinets can be framed or frameless.

So, what is a frameless cabinet versus a framed cabinet? The key difference is that framed cabinets have a 1½-inch face frame affixed to the cabinet box front, with doors installed onto this frame. In contrast, frameless cabinets lack a face frame. Instead, their doors are directly mounted onto the cabinet box.

Hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, and maple are excellent options for building cabinet drawers. These are exceptionally durable woods that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. Additionally, plywood is a common choice for drawer bottoms and sides as it is stable, cost-effective, and available in various thicknesses. Ultimately, the choice of wood depends on your preferences, budget, and the overall aesthetic you want for your cabinet drawers.

Many cabinets use “J-pulls” or other handless designs. However, frequent use also gets these areas very dirty over time. A simple household cleaner and a soft washing cloth is usually enough to clean these areas when grime builds up. Adding a layer of lemon oil or beeswax can help prevent finishes from wearing off.

The depth of your pantry shelves should range between 12 and 24 inches, depending on how high it sits on the wall and your pantry size. Higher shelves should fall on the thinner side since it is harder to reach deep shelving areas the higher you go.
