"RCâ s Plumbing is absolutely the best! Robert, the owner of RCâ s Plumbing, replaced a leaking 75-gallon water heater (with recirculating pump) just yesterday and his quality of work from start to finish was truly superb! His attention to detail and thoughtfulness throughout every step of the project, including the mitigation of mold and reinforcing the raised platform that the heavy (approx. 620-lbs, filled) water heater sits on, is honestly second to none. Something that I also appreciated and valued about RCâ s Plumbing and Robert is how he takes his time to answer any and all questions about the project, both during and after the project. After completion of the project, Robert summarized everything that was done, showed us how to operate the various components (e.g., new valves, gas sediment trap, pressure release valve, etc.) and also shared information about maintenance of our new 75-gallon water heater and registration for warranty. Robert and his technician assistant (his son) also cleaned up the entire work area before leaving. My wife and I could not be more happy! One final but very important noteâ there are many other plumbers out there competing for your project. When it comes to a water heater replacement project, whether it be a common gas water heater with tank storage or a tankless gas or all-electric water heater, many plumbers only offer a specific brand of water heater they like to install. You donâ t really get a choice. With Robert and RCâ s Plumbing, I received an entirely different and genuinely appreciated and valued experience that many other plumbers would not provideâ being able to choose/select the make and model of the water heater you want for your house without paying an inflated price for the project! After doing some research regarding the make and model of water heater I wanted for my home, l shared the information with Robert. He was completely respectful and open to my choice/selection of water heater and without hesitation, agreed to call the plumbing supply houses he normally use to track down the water heater I wanted. When he learned the local supply houses did not carry the specific model I sought, Robert did not hesitate to special order the specific model for me. When the water heater was delivered to RCâ s Plumbing, Robert called to schedule the installation appointment. As stated earlier, my wife and I could not be more happy with the completed project. We highly recommend RCâ s Plumbing without hesitation for all your plumbing needs! Thank you again, Robert, for the super job and you will have us as customers for life! Tom"

"Only good things to say about McLay Services! From scheduling the services call to getting the work done. The technician was up front with pricing and told me only what needed to be repaired on my water heater. He even did a free safety check on my furnace and found a dirty air filter that needed replacement. I will be calling again in the future."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Yes, a heat pump water heater can work in colder climates but it’s much more effective where it’s warm. The reason is that the heat pump needs ambient warmth in the air to compress. The less warmth, the more compression required, thus using more electricity and offsetting the energy-efficient benefits.

The average lifespan of a water heater is eight to 12 years. If your water heater is approaching its first decade of life and is giving you problems, talk to a plumber about your replacement options.

Keep in mind that certain parts of a water heater, such as the anode rod, may need replacement long before the heater itself. An anode rod often has a lifespan of three to five years.

Several signs indicate your water heater may be failing or in need of replacement. Key indicators include:

  • Age: A water heater older than ten years is approaching the end of its typical lifespan.

  • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.

  • Visible Damage: Obvious rust and corrosion on the exterior of the tank can indicate a more serious internal problem.

While these signs often point to replacement, some issues may be fixable. It's best to consult a professional plumber to diagnose the problem before investing in a new unit.

While not all homes require a hot water heater expansion tank, they are necessary in most newer homes and are often mandated by local building codes. Codes typically require an expansion tank if your plumbing system is a 'closed-loop' system, which often includes a backflow preventer or pressure regulator on the main water line. Some municipalities have specific requirements. Installing an expansion tank on a closed system is crucial, as it prevents excess pressure that can damage your water heater and other appliances, potentially shortening their lifespan. However, tankless water heaters do not require an expansion tank.

Going from a tank to a tankless water heater is one of the most effective ways to lower your utility bills. The switch also frees up more space and ensures a consistent hot water supply, as the water is heated on an as-needed basis. It costs between $5,400 and $7,400 to install a new tankless water heater. Most installation companies will also help dispose of your old water tank.
