The painter really didn’t do what I asked him. He then offered to come back out to fix everything. We fixed some of it ourselves, but the painter did end up having someone else to fix it. The general contractor did offer us Price cut because of all the problems. I would never use the painter again. However, he made right on everything. They were very apologetic and nice on the phone, I just wasn’t happy with the recommendation on the painter."
Composite siding, with proper care, can last 30 years and sometimes more. Because its color has a tendency to fade, you might want to re-paint it every five years or so. Before purchasing composite siding, check the manufacturer’s warranty—you should have a long-term warranty to back up the quality of the product.
Some homeowners use caulk on the edges of clapboard siding to help seal it. However, this method invites new problems. With so many gaps sealed, clapboard siding is often unable to drain properly and moisture from rain or other sources can build up inside. This can lead to rot and other issues over time. When repairing clapboards, it’s best to avoid caulking the final product. The exception is trim around windows and doors, which should be caulked to avoid moisture problems.
When it comes to fiber cement siding maintenance, it’s not too much work. However, it needs to be painted about every 15 years and may need to be re-caulked to prevent mold. Be sure to also wash your fiber cement siding with a lower-powered garden hose at least twice a year to avoid buildup and fading as well.
You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.
Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.
