"Doug did an outstanding job on repairing my sagging gate. I was a week out from closing on my home and he fit me in his schedule to make sure it was repaired on time. Not only is he efficient but he was very communicative throughout the process. You can tell he genuinely enjoys his craft and is very appreciative of the business he receives. I will definitely look to hire him on any upcoming projects."

"Clayton was the handyman for our extensive rental portfolio for three years. He did everything: renovations, appliance repair, landscaping, etc. He is by far the best, most trustworthy contractor we have ever had. He has an organized mind and heart of gold. I cannot recommend him enough. It was a major loss to us when he left. Grab a hold of this guy while you can, because pretty soon he will be all booked up with other clients!"

"He did an awesome job. Took down the old deck and replaced all new boards on top. He only had to replace a couple underneath the deck. I would hire him again and would recommend him to anybody. He is reasonable with his pricing."

"I was very happy with the results! Cullen was great to work with he was easy to talk to, responsive, and made sure the job was done right. His team was professional, friendly, and respectful throughout the entire project. The new porch posts turned out beautiful, and I'm very satisfied with the quality of the work. I also really appreciate that they provide aftercare and make sure everything is clean when they left. That level of customer service gave me even more confidence in their work. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable craftsmanship! Thank you Job done: removal of existing wooden column post and replace with fiberglass column posts."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.
