Both cedar and redwood are some of the best woods for pergolas. Both are rot- and insect-resistant and have gorgeous natural tones that age well. Redwood tends to have a longer life span than cedar, but it also comes at a higher cost. While both options are durable, the best wood between these two for your pergola will primarily depend on your budget.

While your municipality may have its own regulations requiring pergolas or other structures to be a certain height above a fire pit, the standard recommendation is that the pergola should be at least 10 feet above the fire pit. A taller pergola allows the heat from the flames to dissipate before reaching the structure.

Your fence post holes should be about three times as wide as the post. So if your post is 4-by-4 inches, you should make your hole at least 12 inches wide. The depth of the hole depends on the height of your post, but it should be as deep as one-third of the post height.

You can install exposed solid wood beams for between $6 and $80 per linear foot, but these beams are often decorative if you’re retrofitting an existing home with them. Laminated veneer lumber beams, more commonly called LVL beams, cost $3 to $12 per linear foot, and while they can’t span nearly as long of a distance as steel I-beams, they can provide more open spaces than traditional wooden beams.

Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.
