"As an interior designer, I'm always looking out for my clients' needs. This time, I was the one in need of a plumber who could come asap to unclog 2 sink drains. JAMES of C&D Drain Cleaning came to the rescue. My pipes, which were exposed in the basement, were made of steel and clogged up due to yrs of accumulating debris from '64 (when my house was built,' to the present. James was right on pt with the problem. He didn't have all the materials to complete this job on May 23rd, so he arrived this morning to finish up unclogging my pipes. He is the consummate professional! He arrived on time, and after working his magic, he cleaned up after himself. James is now listed in my contacts if I ever need his services again. I would be remiss if I didn't write this positive review concerning C&D Drain Cleaning and Sewer Repair. As well as James' honesty and integrity, he didn't overcharge me in the least...in fact he charged me $100 less than his estimate. I couldn't be more pleased with this company. Kudos to C&D!!!"

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Outdoor plumbing issues are no less serious or urgent to fix than interior plumbing problems. These problems may require excavation and lawn repair due to the plumbing often being buried underground. The most common outside plumbing problems include:

  • Clogged landscape drainage: $200–$1,000

  • Clogged sewer lines: $60–$250 per linear foot

  • Corroded or rusted pipes: $1,500–$15,000+

  • Leaking drain lines: $200–$1,000

  • Leaking water mains: $300–$4,000+

  • Septic system failure: $600–$3,000+

  • Tree roots in pipes: $200–$1,000

  • Well pump failure: $350–$1,500

In the majority of cases, homeowners insurance will not cover a main sewer line root clog. The reason is that most insurance companies consider tree root damage to sewer lines as common wear and tear, which is also preventable. However, you may be able to buy optional add-on coverage, such as "service line coverage" or "sewer line endorsements," that would protect against root damage to your sewer line.

A sewer line should be cleaned at least once every 18 to 22 months. The process takes about 30 minutes or up to 5 hours, depending on the size of the line, how easy it is to access, and how long it’s been since the previous cleaning. If your sewer line hasn’t been cleaned in a couple of years or you don’t even know the last time it’s been cleaned, it’s time to call a pro.

One way to save money on sewer lines is to install a sewer cleanout since it makes sewer line maintenance easier. Keeping up with maintenance is key to reducing the cost of repairs, so be sure to schedule annual plumbing inspections, install drain guards to stop objects from accidentally falling down drains, and only flush human waste and toilet paper to protect your pipes.

Yes, sewage smells can originate from a floor drain. If the P-Trap in the floor drain dries out or if there's a clog or other issue in the plumbing system, sewer gasses can escape through the drain, causing nasty odors. Regularly pouring water into the drain helps maintain the water seal and prevent those smells, but if the smell persists, you should have a plumbing professional inspect the drain for potential problems.
