"Takes for ever to get a return a call. Also took a week to get someone out for repairs. They said they would reimburse me for septic repairs and it took over 3 months for that to happen."

Yes, it is generally okay to oversize a well pressure tank, and it will not harm your well system. The primary advantage is that a larger tank reduces frequent pump cycling, leading to longer, slower cycles with fewer startups. This can result in less wear and tear, potentially increasing the lifespan of the pump and conserving energy. However, there are drawbacks to consider. Oversized tanks have a higher upfront cost and require more physical space. While not necessarily a bad thing, opting for a tank that is appropriately sized for your well is often the most efficient choice in terms of cost and space.

Bladder and diaphragm well pressure tanks are usually pre-charged at the factory. Even so, it’s important to check the air pressure in the tank using a tire pressure gauge on the relief valve. The instruction manual usually calls for 28 psi. Use a hand pump to add more air or release some air from the tank to reach the desired number. Check the pressure periodically to see if you need to add more air to the tank.

For the most part, choosing between 30/50 psi and 40/60 psi is based on your water-pressure preference. However, it can also depend a little bit on your house—if you have older plumbing, a lower water pressure can be easier on the pipes (and a bit more gentle on your well pump). 

The lower 30/50 pressure is usually enough for a single-story home, but you may want 40/60 if you have multiple stories, as the extra pressure helps water flow smoothly up to the second floor.

Expect to take at least a day to drill your own well by hand. For a 500-foot well, this could take even longer, depending on the makeup of the soil and the terrain you are drilling through. Other factors include your physical strength and overall fitness level and the weather conditions you’re working in.

Age is certainly a factor in well pump failure. The older your pump, the more likely it is to fail. 

Beyond age, other factors can cause your well pump to fail, too. Things like poor water quality can cause sediment buildup in your pump. Without proper cleaning, your pump can seize up and fail. Having a dry well for too long can also cause your pump to fail, as it keeps working even though there's no water for it to pull.
