Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The best way to keep dirt around your foundation is to ensure your drainage is working properly and redirecting water well away from the foundation. Soil erosion is one of the most common causes of basement flooding, so it’s important to make sure you’re retaining the soil you replaced after learning how to regrade around the foundation. In addition, your foundation planting can also help prevent erosion. For example, plant roots to help keep soil in place.

Mulch is widely available and affordable. You can find it online or at most local home improvement stores.

Sand is a common sublayer for hardscape features like driveways, paver patios, and more. Most projects that involve sand require a 1-inch layer to promote evenness, drainage, and weight distribution. For further drainage, most projects have a 6-inch minimum layer of gravel beneath the sand.

The least costly way to keep grass from growing is also the most labor-intensive: regular weeding. Pull out grass blades as you see them pop up through the soil in areas where they’re unwanted. Another cost-effective way to keep grass from growing is by spreading a thick layer of mulch on the area as this will suffocate the grass.

Yes, rotting leaves can be good for your soil. The decaying leaves release nutrients into the soil that can boost the health of your plants, and the organic matter also helps improve airflow and water drainage.
