"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Mr Handyman recently did several jobs around our home. From hanging new cabinets, to replacing a post on our deck, to placing outlets. They can do all the â honey-doâ things that you need and even more! Handyman Ryan spent 2 days at our home and was very polite and professional. The jobs were done as requested and correctly. We couldnâ t be happier. Thank you Mr Handyman! We appreciate you and we will definitely be telling our friends!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.

Yes, many providers offer design consultations to help optimize and maximize space, functionality, and usage. It is recommended to confirm the availability of this service with your specific installer or contractor.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.

Although you can complete a closet frame in just an afternoon, finishing the entire closet will take a few days to a week. However, that’s still not as much as the average time it takes to remodel a closet, which can take anywhere from several weeks to more than a month. That’s because you also have to consider the time it will take to demolish the existing space, plan a new design, order materials, and actually install it.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.
