If you are building a laminate countertop from scratch, instead of buying premade laminate countertops, you can use particle board underneath the laminate. You will need to use a sheet of particle board for the substrate, along with four-inch strips underneath the edges. For proper installation, make sure that any seams are level and use a sander as necessary before installing the laminate.

It all comes down to rarity and demand. Granite rocks with unique patterns or rare colorways like red, purple, and blue are more expensive than traditional designs. Some types of blue granite are extremely rare, like Azul Aran and Blue Bahia, driving the price up even further. The most expensive type of all is a unique design called Van Gogh granite. As the name suggests, it sort of looks like a painting. 

While porcelain countertops are durable and don’t chip easily once installed, they aren’t chip-proof. If they’re subject to blunt force, chips, cracks, or other damage can occur. For added strength, install support brackets on the base cabinets, then secure your countertop with screws. Make sure you only tighten the screws to the point where the butcher block is snug against the cabinet and don’t overtighten.
