"Sgt. Stripes Asphalt did a fantastic job. I am in Kentucky and the job was in Georgia. They were very efficient, communicated with me. They did the job on the weekend so there would not be any traffic in and out of Post-Office parking lot. Their customer service and work great. I would definitely recommend them."

"South Henry Construction and Land Management did an absolutely outstanding job on our project! They laid asphalt millings for us and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done properly and with care. The quality of their work shows in every detail, the surface is smooth, well-graded, and looks fantastic. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to doing the job right really stood out. We couldn’t be happier with the results and highly recommend them to anyone needing construction or land management services. Truly a 5-star experience from start to finish!"

"Throughout the summer, we've had him come out and do our lawn bi-weekly. On the initial visit, he took the time to ask exactly how we wanted it done and has maintained the same quality of service over the whole summer. He is approachable, kind, understanding and has an excellent attention to detail. We are hiring him for a number of other services around the house and wouldn't choose anyone else!

"The guys are great to work with. They took the time to listen to me to do things exactly the way I wanted. This was a complete backyard in a new construction home. Put up a unique fence I found on Pinterest. Did the patio and sod. I was able to layout all the flower beds and they cut in all the curves. I will be hiring them again soon."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Paving is a part of hardscaping, so all paving is hardscaping, but not all hardscaping is paving. Paving involves laying down concrete or asphalt, while hardscaping can also include the use of paving stones, bricks, gravel, wood, and more. Hardscape features that involve paving are considered permanent and will increase your property taxes, while some other hardscaping features—like those involving bricks, gravel, and paving stones—will not affect property taxes. Paving also typically requires a permit, while hardscaping features considered temporary will not.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Whether you decide to DIY paver installation or want to hire a pro, it’s smart to understand the process. First, you’ll need to prepare the area by clearing away grass and dirt. Next, you’ll add the paver base of gravel and sand before laying the pavers on top. You may need to cut pavers to fit your space or the landscaping design and add edging stones.

The recommended minimum amount for a paver base is 4 inches. From there, it depends on the kind of traffic the pavers will see and the current soil conditions. Two inches of paver base won’t create the amount of stability and support that pavers need to remain securely in place over time.
