"Choice responded quickly but the insurance plan does not pay for all doors to be re-keyed unless you have very few locks. The number of locks covered by the insurance is determined by keyholes, not doors! (Read your policy!) You will likely have to shell out some money to have this essential new-home service if you have more than four keyholes. The locksmith they called was EXCELLENT and made all our locks completely functional. We will happily hire the locksmith again (R.L Locksmith LLC). We paid $201.81 (plus another $50 for some door re-alignment not included in the re-keying benefit) and Choice paid $100 for the job."

Cost factors vary but may include your location, the urgency of the request (emergencies typically cost more), and the complexity and size of the job. With many homes moving from standard mechanical locks to smart and electronic security and locking systems, locksmiths may charge more for the expertise and equipment needed to do the work required by these systems.

Typically, it’s cheaper to rekey your existing locks than to install new ones. The cost to rekey ranges from $80 to $160, while the cost to change locks ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the type of locks. The value of rekeying vs. replacing locks depends on the condition of your locks and whether or not you already want to replace them.
Yes, the cost to hire a reliable, professional locksmith is worth it, especially if you have a larger job like replacing all the locks and doorknobs in your house. If you’re locked out of your home or car, a locksmith has the tools and the knowledge to get you back in without risking damaging your property. You can also hire a locksmith to install or replace a doorknob or lock.
