Warranties offered

"AFS reps responded promptly to our call, came out, spend a lot of time inspecting, explaining and creating an estimate for several things that they said needed to be done. Among their recommendations was digging down 14 feet to install helical piers. We had some significant sticker shock from the whole package of estimates. They offered a discount if we acted quickly. They called later and offered another discount "this week." This was our first estimate. I called a friend who is a retired structural engineer and he spoke to me informally. We then called an independent structural engineer--and also got an additional estimate from someone we heard from a couple of engineers had the best reputation and had been around the longest. No one else recommended the helical piers. Not the independent engineer. Not our experienced former retired engineer, and not the other contractor. The second estimate was considerably more affordable. To be honest, we would never work with a company who offer time-limited discounts for quick decisions. It seems designed to discourage further estimates and signals to me that they would be happy to do the work at a lower cost. I know contractors and vendors do and SHOULD make money on the job--but it's an off-putting sales approach for us."

Affordable Plumbers questions, answered by experts

The only downsides to hiring a master plumber is that they charge a higher hourly rate than a less experienced plumber. Plus, master plumbers likely have less availability, given the demand for highly experienced professionals. The benefits far outweigh the cons, though. Upsides include the following:

  • More professional repair

  • More experience fixing your specific issue

  • Recourse if something goes wrong

  • Warranty for the work (in some cases)

  • Some insulation from lawsuits if the plumber gets injured on your property

Depending on the severity of the freeze and the method used, thawing frozen underground pipes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Applying heat directly to the pipe using heat tape, infrared lamps, or hot water jetting can speed up the process. However, patience and careful monitoring are key to avoiding pipe damage.

Repairing an underground water leak is not easy, and it’s likely not a job for DIYers. To prevent further damage, underground water leaks require the skills of a trained plumber. Underground pipe repairs usually involve digging a trench, repairing or replacing the pipe, and then filling the trench back up. However, some contractors use trenchless repair methods to protect your lawn from looking like a battlefield.

Most homeowners pay between $150 to $500 to replace their frost-free faucet. It depends on the type and the brand. For a lower-end model, you won’t pay much more than the cost to replace a standard outdoor faucet. For a higher-end model, you could end up paying twice as much. Either way, installing a new frost-free faucet can lead to long-term savings by preventing damage to frozen pipes.

Annual inspection prevents leaks, blockages, pressure issues, or other problems from developing.
