"This was the first time I used Home Advisor to find a contractor. Home Advisor linked me with Mr. Electric who did an outstanding job. They were on time, on budget, courteous, professional, and totally a pleasure to work with. Thomas installed a 50 and 30 amp service for us at our property servicing two RV lots as well as installed a power pole with a meter box for the power company to tie into. Jan was a pleasure to work with as she was the voice for the company dealing from everything from scheduling to invoice as well as general questions. Jan was very pleaseant and professional. We will use Mr. Electric in the future and highly recommend their service..."

"Overall it went well. He had to reschedule twice, and both times I was not notified he was not going to make it. I had to call multiple times to find out. Once he did show up, he installed the box in the ceiling which turned out to be a harder job than was anticipated. The box works and my ceiling fan is working great."

"Steve helped my husband figure out why we were unable to operate two cameras at the same time outside. We installed cameras on the back corners of the house but they would not work if they were both installed. The front corners gave no issues. Steve figured out the problem and fixed this and now our home is secured."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.

A 1,500 square foot home will likely need a 15kW to 20kW generator. When deciding on whole-house generator size, add up the total wattage of the devices that you’d like to continue running during a power outage. That way, you can ensure you purchase a generator that can power your necessary appliances or medical equipment during an electrical emergency.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.
