"I wish there were 10 stars for Mike Nichols Construction. Mike took on a complete rebuild on a room no one else in town would touch. The room was destroyed by condensation and dry rot and built by an amateur without a permit. Mike’ s meticulous work ethic started with the drawings on the bid and permit application. They were impeccable. You should ask to look at them. The demo alone was amazing. The foundation, walls, roof, interior, exterior and wood stove work was perfect. Look at the website to see it is true. Mike was at the job every day ready to go, and worked hard with his crew until the work was done. This was in winter in Alaska with little sunlight. He had all the tools needed in his work trailer. The communication was open and reliable. Any concerns were promptly addressed and resolved. There were a few times our orders changed and Mike refunded my account without me knowing or asking. Location and Covid supply issues made ordering and receiving difficult. Mike made it easier for me by ordering and picking up my out of town supplies as needed, at no extra charge. Mike Nichols was fair and polite. He managed his crew efficiently. Mike’s attention to detail is at the standard of a fine craftsman. The room is the jewel of the house and built to a much higher standard than most houses in Seward Alaska! I highly recommend Nichol’s Construction for a fair, professional and highly skilled job."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

New plaster must be fully dry and cured before painting. The drying time for plaster ranges from 1 to 4 hours, but the curing process can take more than five days, depending on various factors, including humidity levels, temperature, the amount of plaster used, and airflow in the area. You should always apply primer before painting plaster.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

Look for flaking paint or air bubbles that burst and then flake away. Paint will begin to flake after being exposed to minimal moisture or water, so it’s a good indicator of any water damage. If you notice your paint starting to flake, feel the plaster underneath to see if it is soft or damp.

Depending on how much adhesive was used as well as the strength of the adhesive, you may have some drywall damage when removing a mirror. You can typically repair most drywall damage if it’s small by sanding the damaged area, applying spackle to smooth the damaged section so it’s flush with the rest of the wall, and repainting the area.

Whether you apply the drywall mesh before or after drywall mud depends on the type of patch it is. For self-adhesive patches, you’ll put the patch down first and then coat it with mud. Mesh patches that are not self-adhesive will require you to put mud down first and then press the mesh into it, followed by additional coats of mud.
