Mike at Aurora Homes kept us in the loop every step of the way. His quote was fair and graciously included a senior discount. Once work finally got underway, the crew was all here early every morning and worked their tails off all day. Initial time estimate was two weeks -- they got it done in 5 days. Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible for small areas. Professional installation ensures proper stretching and a polished finish.

The best flooring materials for a mudroom are porcelain and ceramic tiles. Both are easy to clean and maintain, and they're also water-resistant and highly durable. If you're not a fan of those types, you can also choose another nonporous flooring for your mudroom, such as stone or sealed concrete. Stay away from linoleum, cork, hardwood, and engineered wood, as water and moisture in your mudroom will damage these quickly.

Carpet is an effective natural insulator, so it will make a room slightly warmer than laminate. The material’s insulating properties also make carpeted rooms more efficient for temperature regulation.

Start the first row of vinyl planks along the longest or most visible wall in the room. This will create a clean, straight foundation row to build off of. Snap a chalk line to guide the first row, and use spacers for the most precise installation—these maintain an even extension gap between the flooring planks and the wall. Finally, double-check that the first row is level before moving on to the second row. If it’s not, start over and get it right before completing the rest of the floor.

Laminate flooring takes about 24 to 48  hours to settle. Before this, planks are not completely acclimated to your home, and walking on them could cause shifting and permanent damage to the flooring. You should allow floorboards to acclimate for 48 to 72 hours before installing so that they can adjust to your home’s humidity and temperature levels, but they will continue to acclimate and settle after installation. For this reason, avoid placing any furniture in the room for 72 hours after installation.

Your floors will continue to settle for a few months after installation, becoming less bouncy as they rest.
