This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. While painting your stair's railing is a job for a small collection of various brush sizes, painting the stairs portion of a stairwell with a roller is a matter of personal preference. You can find two-, four-, and six-inch rollers at home centers and hardware stores, which can be excellent for painting treads and risers. However, you'll still need at least one brush to cut in the details and edges. 

The disadvantages of whitewash paint can start when mixing the paint. Too much water can cause chipping and peeling later because the substrate did not fully absorb the solution. It's also difficult to control the consistency of the paint, resulting in an uneven finish. Remember, achieving desired results with whitewash demands skill and patience, as improper techniques can result in streaks, uneven coverage, or premature flaking, adding complexity to the process.

In most cases, paint primer is necessary before painting over wood paneling. A hardy primer formula covers up stains and leaves a grippy surface for the new paint to hold onto. If you don’t use a primer first, you risk poor adhesion, visible blemishes, and a paint top coat that could flake away later. 

There are two primer choices: oil-based or latex-based. Choose an oil-based primer for durability and adhesion, but prepare for extra dry time and more VOC (volatile organic compounds) fumes. Or, pick a stain-blocking latex primer. They’re easy to apply, clean up, and affordable.
