If you take cooking seriously, an organized pantry probably tops your kitchen remodel wish list — after all, it’s where you stash your groceries and what saves your counters from clutter. Especially if you have limited space, making the most of it requires careful planning in both layout and utility. Andreas Messis, co-founder of transFORM, a highly-rated custom storage solutions company in New Rochelle, N.Y., talks about what to consider before remodeling your pantry.

What are some things to consider before undergoing a pantry remodel?

Pantries are something people absolutely have to utilize as an extension of their kitchens. In some cases it’s becoming more of an individual room, and people will fill it based on their lifestyles. Their primary design is to store food items, but more and more we’re seeing people store platters, extra dishes, cookware and vases in pantries, so we take a holistic approach to designing them. We first ask clients, “How are you using the space? What are you storing there?”

What are some common organizational problems you’re fixing with a custom pantry design?

Our clients’ biggest wish is to store as much as they can and also be able to see what they have. The biggest obstacle they face is creating shelves that are too deep. We recommend shelving be no deeper than 16 inches; any deeper and you can start putting things behind each other and you can’t see everything.

What are some solutions for these problems?

People are looking for pullout cabinets so they can have full access to their items; there are even some vertical pullouts that can swivel both ways for storage of smaller items like spices. Other popular items are baskets, trays and built-in metal racks for wine, water bottles and cans.We also make shelves adjustable based on the height of the items you’re storing. We use a one-piece L-shaped corner shelf to make those easier to adjust.

What custom pantry solutions exist for small kitchens?

For people who don’t have the luxury of having enough space for a walk-in pantry, we can build a reach-in pantry by building cabinetry that goes against the wall and face it to look like your kitchen cabinets. Reach-in pantries usually go straight up and can be as short as 3 feet across and as long as 8 feet across.

What’s a realistic budget amount to dedicate to a custom pantry remodel?

It’s hard to do a custom-built pantry remodel under $1,500; for a fully customized pantry with show-piece high-end features the price can go up to $10,000, even $20,000. The average cost ranges from $2,500 to $3,000, depending upon the custom features installed and the pantry’s square footage.
