From the beginning, Abel was very responsive, polite, and helpful. He had good suggestions for what to do to make my neglected and sad-looking yard better. His estimate of time was very good. The total price was excellent - half of some other quotes I'd gotten. Initial work was delayed because of snow and rain (totally reasonable), and he was great about keeping in touch and communicating the plan. When the work did start, I made sure to be there soon after they arrived to go over specifics with the crew. Abel was not present during most of the work, which turned out to be a problem. I had been concerned from the beginning about my perennials being removed by accident since it is early spring and they are just emerging, so I took one of the crew members around my entire property and pointed out the 25 or 30 perennials that I was worried about. I speak Spanish and made myself clear about NOT removing the plants that were supposed to be there. So I was quite disappointed and upset to come home after the work was complete to find a significant number of perennials ripped up and gone. Some of these were new from last year and some I had been tending to for 15 years. I felt really bad, and made that clear to the crew and later to Abel when he came. Abel was very apologetic, and upset himself. Apparently it was one member of the crew who either didn't care or didn't understand. He gave me a small discount ($75 on a $1600 bill) which I appreciated as a gesture, and offered to replace the plants, but I don't even know myself all that was gone - half of them I don't know the name of. I told him I wanted to pick the plants out. Anyway, the frustrating part for me is that probably only 30-40% of perennials that I plant turn out to live multiple years, and these were the survivors!! These were the ones I had nourished through hot summers, etc. So that is why I gave him a C for work I was otherwise satisfied with. He uses cheap labor, which keeps costs down for everyone, but I paid for it in plant loss. I will continue to use him - we have agreed on a monthly maintenance plan - in part because I believe he will work hard to overcome this one significant mistake. He seems like a good businessman who needs to make sure he doesn't lose control of the quality of the work performed in his name. I hope he learns from this.
