I have used Jim for several years and am always pleased with his work. He is at every job to oversee and often help with the physical labor. His wife is a landscape architect and together they make a great team. Jim is friendly, professional and listens to what you want. He works on small and big jobs and is always accessible. I highly recommend Jim and his company. Once I was having a party and he made sure that the lawn and gardens looked fabulous for the event. I often have friends and neighbors ask who does my landscaping.

Tiger Lily Landscapes LLC
I was looking for help designing and installing a medium-sized garden with plants that would be beautiful yet hardy enough to survive the drainage, sun, shade issues that interfered with my attempts to do this myself. I also wanted an interesting sense of design -- not the same exact plants I see on my walk to work every day and something with some personality! TigerLily provided all of the above. If you love plants and gardens and are looking to create a special space -- but can't quite put it together on your own -- you'll consider TigerLily a find indeed!

I don't have a real good comparison regarding their price. They are very responsive and timely. They have a very transparent approach to highlighting the different costs. They have good materials for the customer to read and a comprehensive work site. They are not finished but so far the work has been good.

I had been wanting to plant more native species in the front yard, but never got around to it on my own. When I learned Lisa Caprioglio of Aldertree Garden specialized in planting native species, she stood out among the garden designers in the area. Lisa met with me to discuss flower and tree preferences and location. She then proposed a garden design for the front and side of the house. After we tweaked the proposed design, she brought her crew to install the gardens. Lisa was really helpful in suggesting what would do really well in the different garden areas. Once the work got started, we had an additional cost we had not anticipated. We discovered that the soil below the grass was full of pebbles. She and her crew carefully removed the soil one wheelbarrow at a time because they had to avoid the huge number of roots from our prized maple tree. In its place, Lisa filled the area with super rich soil which helped all the plants establish themselves well and even helped the trees nearby. We now have a bird garden, a side garden, and a forest garden. Lisa created a bird garden to attract the local birds as well as those that migrate through the area. In the summer, at the height of the blooms, we had the regulars--cardinals, house finches, wood peckers, doves, and chickadees. We also had special visits by several gold finches. We love Lisa's ideas, patience, and work ethic. I have continued to use her services since the garden was first installed. I highly recommend Lisa of Aldertree Garden.

He was always responsive, and punctual and professional. They did high quality work. If we had any revisions he was responsive to that and helped make suggestions.

I have been using them for the last 2 years. Everything was great. The owner is very consientious and in tune with gardens and devoted to them.
- Michael S.
The owner worked with me on the design for the rock garden, which is very beautiful. He told me what kinds of shrubbery would work best for what I wanted. The seeding didn't take, so he gave me the option of having it redone. They came back in the fall and completely reseeded at no cost to me. I think that their specialty is design and landscaping rather than seeding.

Hawthorne Garden Design
We have used Hawthorne Garden Design twice and each experience was positive. Tamara and the installation team were responsive, patient, friendly, and professional. She listened carefully to our requirements and her recommendations brought our vision to life. Communications throughout the project were frequent and we always felt we could get our questions handled quickly. We added a small project just before our most recent work began and Tamara quickly provided design options, a detailed estimate, and ensured that this work was done without upsetting the primary project’s schedule. The installation team worked quickly, quietly, and completed the work faster than anticipated. The finished project is impressive. If you are planning to undertake any landscaping work, you should strongly consider Hawthorne Garden Design.

MACPEAK LANDSCAPING INC
Our yard was completely demolished after a large construction project and we were is need of a complete overhaul. After trying three other landscaping companies and being burned a few times, we proceeded cautiously with MacPeak, and we could not be happier with the company, the entire process, and the end result. Thank you MacPeak!!! They were responsible, hard working, listened to our needs, did not oversell, and delivered a garden that we love (I smile every time I walk outside now)! I am a plant person with particular requests and they patiently worked through the plan with me. Their prices were the most reasonable out of anyone I have used for outdoor work, by far. The owner is incredibly nice, timely, responsible, sticks to the estimate, and does fantastic work. He is a rare find! He shows up on site and stays hands on (another rarity) and he was willing to work with my "all organic" request, even when it meant more work for him. He also installed and maintains my neighbor's gardens, so I can vouch for the company two times over. I have referred him to other friends and they report similarly very positive experiences. There are few times in life that I could say this, but I can wholeheartedly and with full confidence recommend this company.

Yard By Yard Makeovers LLC
Brian and his crew came right out when I called, and Brian essentially drew my garden design on the spot with a can of spray paint. His ideas were spot on and he understood exactly what I had in mind. He was willing to reuse the plants I had in order to keep costs down, dividing and moving them to new and better spots in the garden. His workers were efficient, polite and cleaned everything up beautifully. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and my new garden is just lovely. I couldn't be more pleased and I certainly plan to hire him again in the future.

Merrifield Garden Center - Merrifield
Tom came back to spray Roundup on our grass (mostly weeds) and then a week or so later he and a crew returned with the plants. The crew prepared the soil and planted everything in a day (It's not a very big yard). A few days later, the crew returned to remove the dead grass and seed and cover with straw the grass area. Tom gave us directions for watering both grass and plants. As time has passed I have had a few questions which I emailed to Tom and he answered by the next day. So I feel I have advice whenever I need it. Most of the plants were in excellent shape when planted and have done very well. There are a few that didn't look so hot; however, it was a fall planting and some of the plants had already begun to lose leaves. All the plants are guaranteed for a year so I will wait until spring to see how everything is doing. For now the yard looks very good. Tom selected plants that would give us color for as much of the year as possible. We have a shady garden, and I think the plants selected will provide interest for all of the growing season. The grass is doing great; it's the first time we've had real grass. We are very pleased with the results. We chose Merrifield because they have a good reputation for quality. Tom was a big help in choosing the right plants for our space and sunlight. It will take time to know how well the plants will do.

Hawthorne Garden Design
We are so happy with the results of this project and the work done by Tamara and her team. From the first on-site consult through to the finishing touches, Tamara was helpful, knowledgeable and considerate of our budget and vision. She was really fun to work with and, compared to other quotes we received, a great value. Tamara took great care with our garden plan. We had expressed that native plants were a priority and invasives were off the table. She gave us options for almost each type of plant that she included in the garden design and was patient while we decided on the final combination. After the plants were installed, she had a follow-up call to make sure we understood how to care for them. One thing that made us decide to go with Hawthorne Garden Design was the fact that Tamara was able to subcontract for the iron work and hardscaping. Other landscape companies would only do the plantings or plantings + hardscape, but not all three. This made it so much easier for us to make sure we understood the quotes and to coordinate dates and times to get the work done. Sandoval Landscaping did the railings, fence and flagstone path. It looks beautiful and they were really great to work with, coming back to the house an extra time just to walk me through the final details and make sure we'd be happy with the results. From the street, our house looks like a different house entirely and we are still getting compliments from neighbors more than six weeks later. Thank you, HGD!

It was difficult to get Chris to commit to a time, but in the beginning part of the job he was reasonably prompt. Followup was dreadful however and he did not return calls or come back to DC to correct obvious mistakes. He connected the drains incorrectly in two ways-first he connected them to the drain for the still future hot tub, second he used the wrong sized drain despite the size of piping being specified on detailed drawings. The result is that the stone does not drain well and is constantly dirty. In terms of planting, the trees were left in metal cages and 4 years later 2 trees are dead, and were replaced the 3rd has had to have the cage removed, we will see if it survives. His response to the fact that the trees were not doing well was to suggest fertilizer. He declined to come out. In addition, he sued for $200 the amount that was held back to ensure a job was completed, he never did a final inspection, when confronted with the drain issue, he withdrew his suit.

We met Matt a few times on nature walks that he leads and were excited to learn that he also designs gardens. We love his respect for native species, which we were really looking for. I did most of the hard work, but got Matt to remove some of the bigger yard waste (tree stumps, bushes, etc.). He spent some time interviewing us in our yard and getting a vision for what we should plant. A few weeks later, he gave us a carefully drawn layout of about 50 plants, with grasses, groundcover, bushes, and a tree. The plants are all native species and we won't have to water them after the first year. He also sold us almost all of the plants we used, and only one didn't make it through the first year. We love how the yard looks and are looking forward to hiring Matt to help us with another section of the yard soon. He's also done work for a neighbor that looks great.

Johnson's Landscaping Service Inc
Primary purpose of this job was hardscape; landscape was secondary to the project. We primarily needed to replace our solid brick front walkway and front stoop, and to have a stone wall built to balance a steep sloping yard. Earlier in the fall we had received numerous bids from a number of companies selected from Angies list (with high ratings) with widely varying price bids. While we had a few ideas and preferences, we were looking for a company that would hear those ideas, but offer confident suggestions for the most successful and attractive outcome. Despite meeting some nice owners/reps from other companies, no one seemed to totally "click" for us. On a whim, I called Johnson's Landscaping after receiving an advertising post card from them in the mail. Jamie, the designer who came out to look at our project, was very low-key but had the best overall vision for the entire project, and also the best plant and tree suggestions that would ultimately be worked in. We had to wait some time before they could start our project, and we were hoping for completion by Thanksgiving. They weren't able to meet that deadline in the end, but the overall quality was worth the wait. The stonework crew was absolutely top-notch; showing up punctually each day, and working efficiently & meticulously through each stage. The end result of the new flagstone walkway, porch stoop, and stone walls was even more beautiful than we could've imagined. If there ever was any concern, (and there were very few with this crew!) Jamies was just a phone call away, and always addressed any issues right away. The landscaping (done by a different group of workers) that followed did not go quite as smoothly as the stone work, but again, Jamie was responsive and attentive when needed. The crew that came to do the landscaping required us to monitor the progress a bit more; they ultimately got everything planted attractively, but they seemed to need more direction from Jamie. As with any expensive home project, the homeowners must be careful to monitor the progress and bring up concerns ASAP. Because Jamie was so good with responding to our calls concerning a less-efficient landscape crew, we are giving this company an "A" rating. And they deserve it for overall quality and beauty of design. We have received numerous compliments from friends and neighbors, and 1+ year later we are still so pleased with the work.

I needed help coming up with a plan for my half acre residential property. After a bit of research, I came across John’s website and made an appointment for him to come out to my place just before New Year’s to give me an estimate for garden design. He told me it would cost between $500-750 for the plan, and I asked him if we could keep it closer to $500. It took more than two months to get an initial draft of the plan, at which point I paid approximately $300 for the work to date. Within about three weeks of getting the draft plan, I reviewed the it, made some suggested changes, and asked some questions about items that weren’t clear. A couple of weeks later, I asked for an update on when I could expect it. I was told it would be a couple of weeks. It never came, and I never heard from Magee Design again.

Merrifield Garden Center - Merrifield
This project was supposed to be completed in the fall of 2014 and it is still ongoing as of late June 2015. Plants have died do to improper planting (rootball exposed above ground) and lack of irrigation. The irrigation was supposed to be turned on in the fall of 2014, but was only turned on in May 2015. More irrigation was installed than specified which increased the cost. The concrete that was laid was improperly installed and had to be redone by a different contractor. The fence installed is missing pickets. It was supposed to be completed in fall 2014 and was not in place until spring 2015. It is still incomplete as of June 2015 The work crews were often 4 or more hours late and cancelled appointments at the last minute. Incorrect plants were planted. My garden designers from London provided a list of plant variety and quantity plus a detailed planting plan. Merrifields is not honoring it's verbal guarantee of replacing plants that die within one year of planting. Most of the plants died to the lack of irrigation. All invoices were paid promptly, so there is no excuse for the work not to be completed. The head of Merrifields no longer responds to emails. I have been trying to contact him for months.

Hawthorne Garden Design
This was as perfect an experience as you could imagine. Tamara was completely open and receptive to all of my needs and concerns. She also had very strong ideas of her own, which I really appreciate. She gave me great advice on where I should put my priorities (the front of the house, not the back) and how I should spend my budget. She also has deep extensive knowledge of rocks and plants so suggested many types to choose from and helped me narrow down. She had the work done on time and efficiently, and it looks absolutely beautiful. Its like walking into a whole new house. Plus she set me up with maintenance team that comes and mulches and cleans up twice a year. I highly recommend this to anyone.
