It was a difficult remodel, as my in laws home is very old, built in the 50s, and none of the walls in the bathroom were squared or leveled, thinking he would have a difficult time. but the remodel was finished in time, below budget, and the end result was beautiful! His team were all highly professional and very trustworthy, as i had to give them access to a residential home with no one living there, and they are very trustworthy! Replacing a toilet takes two to four hours. Several factors, including the condition of the old toilet and flange, can impact the installation time. Inspect the flange for cracks, chips, or other signs of damage. You can reuse it and the bolts if they’re in good working order. If not, you’ll need to purchase an identical one and install it before attaching the toilet, which adds time. Be careful when moving the old and new toilets—they’re heavy, so it’s best to hire a pro to get the placement right.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

The amount of water wasted when a toilet ghost flushes depends on the cause of the ghost flushing. Leaky flapper valves tend to waste less water than a larger problem like a damaged flush valve that makes the toilet run constantly. Even if you don’t think you’re wasting a lot of water, it’s still a problem that should be fixed quickly. 

If you notice water coming out of the bottom of your tank or the flush handle, you obviously have a leaking tank. Water on the side of the tank can indicate cracks. Other signs include the toilet running and flushing without anyone touching the handle, needing to jiggle the handle to make the water stop after flushing, or needing to hold the handle down to empty the water tank.

Recaulk your toilet at least every five years. If you feel like your toilet is getting wobbly before that, it still might be time for a new caulking. Never directly place new caulk over existing caulk because that doesn’t produce lasting results. Also, caulking over existing moldy caulk does not kill out the mold by suffocating it, so if you have mold, be sure to get rid of it before recaulking.
