"They immediately got started and started snaking the drain. The equipment they were using broke several times and had to be adjusted. They kept going and at approximately 40 feet in to the drain came to what appeared to be an obstruction. They informed me there was an obstruction in the line and provided a estimate of approximately $3900 to dig the line and replace what they believed to be a crushed line. That said, the obstruction was not fixed on the initial visit, but I was informed the original call cost would be deducted from the 5 foot spot fix for the crushed line.
Fortunately, my son in law was here for the holidays and he and I agreed the repair ($3900) was well outside of what was reasonable and that we would attempt to fix the crushed pipe ourselves. My single best decision from the not so good experience above. The Mr. Rooter plumber did show me approximately where the obstruction was outside my home so we started digging there today. We found the obstruction was actually an outside service pipe that had been installed by the previous owner. My son in law and I, opened the service line, relieved the pressure, ran my garden hose down the pipe and completely cleared the obstruction. All that said, I went from a costly service call ($262) to a $3900 repair in about 40 minutes using Mr. Rooter. Maybe if the equipment had been in better condition it would have gone through the pipe easier, don't know. I had used Mr. Rooter about 2 or so years ago and had a completely different experience and paid just under $100 (still costly) for the exact same service and that representative was able to rund the snake clear to the road, over 100 feed. Overall, nice representatives, not so good equipment, maybe a little more expertise prior to going for a costly repair. Thank goodness my son in law was home. We were actually done by 3PM, I now know the location of the outside service access and had a nice lunch as well. Again, get an estimate on the phone before you have them come to your home."

Drain Pipe Installation questions, answered by experts

You should inspect and clean your French drain at least once per year to keep it in good working order. Regular maintenance can help identify clogs, buildup, and damage before they become bigger problems, which increases the lifespan of your drain. The frequency with which a drain clogs can depend on factors like the amount of debris, the quality of the installation, and the type of filter used. If your drain accumulates a lot of sediment, it may require more frequent cleaning. It's also a good practice to check the access and exit points after heavy storms. If you notice reduced drainage or any signs of a clog, clean the drain as soon as possible.

That pungent rotten egg smell coming from your drain is likely the buildup of biofilm—hair, skin, and soap scum that turns into a black sticky mess. In this case, pouring down near-boiling water, baking soda, and white vinegar will remove the smell. Keep in mind that a rotten egg smell is occasionally a sign of larger sewage line clogs and other related issues.

Yes, chemical drain cleaners contain sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, both of which are not only dangerous to your health but also extremely caustic. Drain cleaners will corrode your pipes and could lead to destroyed drain lines, especially if the chemicals interact with the piping for long periods. Unfortunately, this extended interaction is likely if you’re dealing with a clog, as the drain cleaner will have just as much trouble as water does moving through your plumbing system.

No, it is not advisable to spray pesticides down the drain in your home. Most drinking water and wastewater treatment systems are not properly equipped to remove pesticides. Should pesticides infiltrate waterways, they can cause harm to plants, fish, or other living things. In most areas, pouring pesticides down the drain is illegal due to the potential harm it causes.

Unlike regular cleanings, snaking your sewer line should be done as needed. There’s no reason to snake your sewer line if you don’t have any noticeable issues, like slow drainage or plugged drains. You can add it to your regular sewer cleaning checklist as a prevention method (on the same 18- to 22-month schedule), but it’s not always necessary.
