Small jobs welcome

"Can not say enough good things about this group of guys. Punctual, honest, hard working, and excellent painters. They recently completed a three day interior paint job for us. Everyday they arrived 10 minutes early and cleaned up before leaving. They covered up the area of the house they worked in each day before starting and did not get paint on anything for us. Dakota-one of the senior painters on the crew is very meticulous and did a great job cutting in all the corners and around the stairs. Axl, another painter on the crew, did great work for us painting the ceiling on the main level. Shiloh, the owner, who is a master painter would double check all the work each day to make sure everything was completed to our satisfaction. Before wrapping up the last day they vacuumed every room they worked in and wiped down dust from working on stress cracks. Just a terrific and honest contractor and from many past experiences not easy to find. Highly recommended and will surely use again in the future."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

Pressure-treated decks last 15 to 20 years on average, but with proper maintenance, you could get 40 to 50 years of value from yours. Reseal your deck every one to two years, and replace old or rotted wood as soon as possible to avoid structural damage. Where you live plays a role in the lifespan of your deck. Intense sunlight, rainfall, wind, and hail can reduce the deck’s lifespan.

When building an outdoor or deck gate, it's crucial to use durable wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions like sunlight, rain, wind, and snow. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay. While redwood is considered more elegant, cedar is a more affordable option. Other suitable woods include oak and pressure-treated pine, which is specifically treated to resist rot. Although some softwoods like pine are popular, untreated softwoods such as pine and spruce should generally be avoided for outdoor projects because they are susceptible to damage from water, rot, and the sun. Ultimately, it's wise to consider your local climate when selecting the right wood for your gate.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.
