One of the first signs of mold in an air conditioner is a musty smell. You're likely to notice the smell when the unit runs, from the air coming out of the vents or the unit itself. Mold loves a moist environment, so the best way to keep it from returning is to keep your machine as dry as possible. Take laundry out of the machine as soon as you can after a cycle finishes. If your laundry room is humid, consider using a dehumidifier or at least running a fan to increase airflow.

It's also a good idea to leave the washing machine door open when it's not in use, to improve airflow and keep the interior dry.

Green or white mold can be cleaned with DIY methods, but if you see black mold, call a professional. Black mold is toxic and harmful to your health.

Mold can begin growing in as little as one to two days after your ceiling has been exposed to water. Mold grows and spreads quickly and can cause serious health problems. Always ensure areas with leaks are fully dried out, and any damaged material is replaced to discourage mold growth.
