What makes it so secure are the one-way screws that go through the door, the door frame or house wall, and into the home. Make sure to align your door so it swings outward, with the door handle aligned with the existing door’s handle.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a gate or fence on your property. Before your local municipality can issue a building permit, you might also need a site plan or survey to identify property lines. Otherwise, you could infringe on your neighbor’s property, leading to having to pay to take down and re-erect the fence. Permits for a gate and fence usually cost under $100. Luckily, your gate installation company will usually pull the permits for you and handle all of the red tape.

Generally, the standard 10- to 12-inch-long and 1- to 1.5-inch-diameter gate springs will work. However, if you have an especially wide, thick, or heavy garden gate, you may need to opt for a longer, broader—and pricier—model to ensure secure closure and good longevity. These typically range between 12 and 16 inches long and are over 1.5 inches in diameter.
