"I hired Jim Meinen and his team to remove a jacuzzi and put in a walk in shower in the master bathroom as well as a kitchen remodel. Jim is a man of his word and he finished the job in a timely manner, he is a master builder and is 2 steps ahead of any issues that might arise. He and his team are respectful, friendly and leave a spotlessly clean work area and most importantly, know what they are doing. I have been recommending them to all my friends and family and should I need more work done I would not go to any other contractor."

"I needed to replace an outside bunker door that accesses the basement of a summer home. I tried to find a local handyman through the internet and Home Depot with little success. I then tried Angie’s List and Juan the Handyman was first to respond. Overall, Juan did an excellent job in quickly visiting the job site, estimating the work, suggesting alternate solutions and quoting a reasonable price. After accepting the proposal Juan began work immediately. He sent pictures to me during the work to keep me informed. The completed job was better than expected and I am extremely satisfied with the work and Juan. I would highly recommend Juan to anyone looking for a good handyman."

"They were very thorough. They protected my home with plastic and filtration and went above and beyond removing the asbestos tiles. The tile and mastic are completely gone and the floor underneath is smooth. I never would have been able to do that on my own! They even moved the hot water heater to get tiles from underneath which I did not expect. 10/10 would recommend!!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
