"This is the first time I used Mr. Sparky, and they will definitely be my new go to electricians! I love that they are a small locally owned business! I called about a small non-urgent project, and they were able to come the same day, despite being backed up due to many local flooding issues. Kasey was extremely friendly and helpful on the phone and communication was excellent from start to finish. James showed up on time and was very sweet, yet professional, and my cats even loved him :) He was respectful of me and my property, and took care of my issue in no time. The price was very reasonable! I will definitely call them again, and would highly recommend!"

"Jim, is an outstanding electrician and a great person to work with. He showed up exactly on time for the free estimate. He was courteous. I did a lot of research looking for a contractor for my job. Jim from 'Powerhouse' was the first of my many estimates. I'm extremely happy I chose him. As far as the work he did for me is concerned, it was extraordinary! He went above and beyond. Explained things and answered all of my many questions very well!!! It is unusual to find a person like Jim from Powerhouse LLC. I would and will recommend him to everyone who needs electrical help. He was even kind enough to be flexible on the day we scheduled for the work to be done. I was running a little late and he was so kind and able to arrive at an adjusted time. Thank you so much, Jim! Randy K P.S. The estimate he gave me was was spot on and didn't go one penny more."

Small jobs welcome

"This was one of only two electricians that responded to my request. I was very happy with the speed of response. He had an electrician that was finishing up just a few miles away. A call was made, and my problem was fixed within an hour on day one. Cost was a bit more than I expected, but not having hired an electrician before, I had no idea what to expect. Service was fast and friendly. I was very satisfied."

"Elliott does great work for a great price. He installed a new 100 amp breaker box and updated some of the house wiring to accommodate the new service. He also wired the newly renovated basement with all the wiring and installed all the outlets, switches and drop ceiling LED lights that have dimmer capability. He is meticulous in what he does."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.
