They gave an estimate via photos and email since job site was over an hour away which worked great. Worked til job was finished and did so in a timely manner. We also added clearing a new driveway after the fact and did amazing job. Great communication - would definitely hire again and give referral. Photos are Before and afters. "

"The staff seem to be really good and professional people. The reason for my 2-star rating is that the work done simply didn't deliver on expectations of durability. There are sections of my driveway where nearly all of the seal coating came off in less than 9 months, so I am going to have to re-do the job myself. This is not what I had in mind when I paid over $1,100 (a fair price, if it would have lasted longer). I understand that the work isn't covered anymore, as I didn't report it until the thaw revealed so much was missing, and I'm not upset with Merit or their staff. The cost to dig a trench ranges from $400 to $1,200 per 100 linear feet, depending on the soil, depth, and width. Plan to spend $5 to $12 per linear foot for trenching (it’ll be on the higher end if you have rocky soil). Renting a trencher costs $100 to $250 per hour, depending on the type of trencher. 

Most municipalities require excavation permits for any significant digging, especially if the excavation affects utilities or public property. However, permits for excavation depend on your local government and the scope of the project. Hire an experienced contractor for your excavation job so that they can be the ones to deal with permitting, not you. 

If you’re planning to dig on your property, you’ll need to check for underground utility lines. Call the national call-before-you-dig 811 number. Once connected to an operator, you can schedule a site visit to mark underground lines. This way, you won’t accidentally dig into pipes and can cause major (read: costly) issues.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help. 

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.
