"Happy Homes Remodeling did an excellent job, remodeling my home. I had other companies come for estimates, but nothing compared. Happy Homes made the whole process easy. From the first time I met Craig, I knew his company was the one that was going to do the remodeling. He was super knowledgeable and was able to understand, exactly, my vision. He went over everything with and broke down what it was going to take to get everything done the way I wanted it. They started the project on January 3rd. I was there when the guys got there, so Craig could introduce me to the guys that were going to be doing the work. I have to say, the guys were a lot like Craig. Sean and Cole were also super knowledgeable and friendly. Because I had just bought the house, I didn’t live there during any of this project. I was, however, able to stop by, at any time, to see what was happening. They were always welcoming and willing to take the time to let me know what they were doing and what was coming up next. It was good to know that the people in my house were completely trustworthy and transparent. They remodeled the kitchen, which turned out exactly the way I pictured it. They removed a large wood burning stove from the living room, also removing the chimney and patching the roof afterward. They remodeled the bathroom, making it 4 feet wider than it was. They put in a big walk in shower and made the rest of the bathroom completely handicap accessible. (just in case…) They knocked out walls and put up new ones. Moved the laundry from the basement to upstairs, into a laundry room that was made from one of the old bedrooms. They made a bedroom bigger, and the laundry room smaller by moving the wall a couple of feet. They knocked down another wall and made extra space added on to the bedroom. They made the doorways bigger, to accommodate a walker or wheelchair. (Again, just in case…) Honestly, from the ceiling to the flooring, and everything in between, it turned out perfect! Craig and Sean were always keeping me updated. I would get phone calls from one or the other, at least, weekly. In many cases I heard from them more, just to keep me up to date with the progress and what would be happening next. This company was amazing to work with. I have already recommended them to 3 people. I will continue to recommend them because I truly believe they are the best people to do whatever job you may have. This was pretty stressful for me at first, but once they started the work and I talked to them more, my stress went away. Such a positive experience. I will be calling them again. I will be wanting a sliding door and a patio done next year! ?"

"I feel extremely fortunate to have found Vicki through Angie's List !  She is an extremely talented person who is very easy to deal with. She has a breath of knowledge that allows her to accommodate my tastes, but also ensure that the overall design is in sync with the design and location of my home.  She has  a very diplomatic way of suggesting when I'm going astray with my choices and in every case where she has told me "Trust Me"  I have been delighted ! She is very aggressive in helping me find the best pricing and often times will work with the vendors directly  hence saving me the time.  She also has excellent local contacts.  Everyone I've worked with through Vicki has been timely, professional, and highly competent.
My project is far from complete.  I intend to continue to use Vicki and her expert advice until the end !!!!"

"Brent and his team built a half bath in my basement. Very easy to work with and receptive to feedback and ideas to help vision become reality. Quality of work was very good and I would consider his pricing a value for the final product. Would highly recommend and hire him again for any future projects. Tom Hoeft"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.

The time it takes to finish or remodel a basement can vary significantly, ranging from a few weeks to several months or even up to a year. On average, the construction phase can take four to eight weeks, but the total project time can extend to three or four months when including planning and permits. The timeline depends on several factors, including the basement's size, design complexity, the scope of the work, and your contractor's availability. A more detailed breakdown for an average-sized basement might include: framing (3-5 days), electrical and rough-in plumbing (3-5 days), drywall installation (5 days), flooring (2-3 days), and final touches like painting and trim (about a week). If preliminary work like installing a waterproofing system or addressing structural issues is needed, the timeline could extend to six to twelve months. Factors like difficult access, material transport, and ventilation needs can also add to the project's duration.

You should plan on waiting at least a year and ideally two to three years after construction before finishing your basement. This will give the foundation time to settle in response to the weight of your home and the expansion of the surrounding soil. You can then repair your foundation and seal any cracks as needed before finishing it to reduce your risk of future leaks or other issues.

Kitchens and bathrooms are typically the most expensive rooms to renovate. The high cost is due to several factors, including expensive appliances like ranges, hoods, and refrigerators, as well as costly fixtures. The 'bones' of the room, such as electrical and plumbing, are also expensive to move or replace. Because of the vast amount of prep work, finishing, and specialized labor involved in a relatively small footprint, these projects can cost double or more than a living space remodel. Even when trying to renovate on a budget, kitchens and bathrooms will likely carry a hefty price tag.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.
