"Dave was very professional and prompt. He answered all of questions without hesitation which told us that he has been in the business for quite awhile. He takes his time and and thoroughly cleans up after his job is complete. I would definitely recommend him for pressure washing decks. He also does deck staining."

"We would recommend Deck Rescue for all of your deck cleaning and staining. Carlos came out right after being contacted to give an estimate. He is extremely friendly and easygoing, yet also very professional. He quoted us a very reasonable price for the work on our deck (@1300 square feet with benches, planters, and railings), so we hired him. He gave us @48 hoursâ notice before coming out to do the cleaning of the deck, which was spotty and stained with algae. His process not only cleaned the deck but also got rid of the stains. After completing the cleaning, he told us heâ d be coming back in 4 days when the weather would be most favorable to do the staining. Carlos confirmed the appointment both the day before and the day of the staining. He spent most of the day staining the deck. His work was impeccable. He was very careful not to overspray areas and also to make sure the stain covered properly. In two years, Carlos and Deck Rescue will be our first choice for taking care of our deck."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You typically don’t need a railing and handrails on a deck that’s less than 30 inches from the ground. However, consider adding them regardless. Railings provide additional safety for you and your guests who use your deck—plus, railings give the deck a more finished look than it would have without them.

That depends on the condition of your deck. An older deck that looks drab, worn, or has multiple damaged boards might be worth replacing before selling. However, if your deck is in good condition, you can simply clean, repaint, or stain it.

Homeowners should build their floating decks at least 18 inches off the ground. Having it at this height will allow for better airflow underneath and help prevent moisture-related problems like warping or rot. That being said, local guidelines for deck heights may vary depending on where you live.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
