To keep water bills as low as possible, only use your sprinkler system when you need to, particularly during hot summer months when there hasn’t been much rain. Keep an eye on your bill, so you have an idea of how much it goes up because excessive jumps in your bill amount could be a sign of a leak in your sprinkler system or elsewhere in your home.

In most cases, you don’t need to water a garden every day. Water plants in well-draining sandy soil about twice a week, and water plants in mulch or heavier clay soils about once per week. If temperatures are extremely hot, you may need to water every day. A good rule of thumb is to stick your finger in the soil. If it’s dry a few inches down, your plants could use water.

If you already have a sprinkler system installed, some smart sprinkler controllers can simply replace your existing sprinkler timer—a process you can do if you’re comfortable with basic wiring.
