"The workers were professional, friendly, and informative. Unfortunately a lot of repairs need to be done for fireplace safety and repair of chimney stone work. The price is high but I don't know - it might be a fair estimate. With that level of expense it's advisable to get a couple of more bids before deciding, so I'll probably do that."

Another bonus: you can usually move prebuilt units. Custom projects are more common when homeowners have access to a larger budget and more area in the yard to place the fireplace.

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods.
