"Ken was fantastic from start to finish. I hired him to remove an old basketball hoop, pour new cement, and install a new one. The job turned out to be much tougher than expected—the old cement was nearly impossible to break up and the clay ground was hard to dig deeper for the required dept —but Ken handled it like a pro, using a jackhammer and digging through hard clay soil without complaint. Despite the extra work and materials needed, he stuck to his original price even when I asked to pay him more, which speaks volumes about his integrity. He returned a few days later to assemble the hoop, and the final result was perfect—every measurement was spot-on. Ken went above and beyond, and I wouldn’t hesitate to hire him again. Highly recommended!"

No, it isn’t necessary to skirt a deck, but investing in the cost to install deck skirting can bring more value to your home. Not only does deck skirting make the deck look more complete, but it can also turn otherwise unused space beneath the deck into useful storage space.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. While the chemical, copper-based coating on pressure-treated wood offers protection from rot and pests, it’s not a silver bullet. An added sealant will help protect the wood further, though sometimes the wood is treated in a way that causes premature failure, and this is largely out of your control. It’s simply a case of bad luck. Regularly inspect all your house’s wood to look for any cracks or signs of mold and mildew. Getting ahead of the problem is the key to ensuring it doesn’t grow out of control.
