"After refinishing our deck twice on our own with mediocre results both times, we finally decided to bring in a pro - and we couldn’t be happier with that decision. 507 Decks did an outstanding job from start to finish. Communication was clear and prompt, the service was professional, and most importantly we now have a deck we can actually enjoy for years to come. If you’re in the Winona area and need deck work done right, 507 Decks is the call to make."
"Driftless Exteriors is a true one-stop shop! They pressure washed our home, cleaned the exterior windows, stained our deck, and even painted our kitchen. Everything turned out amazing!! It?s been a long time since we?ve experienced service this good.
This small business genuinely puts its customers first. From communication and scheduling to the quality of the work, they kept us updated and informed every step of the way. 5/5 stars! We would absolutely hire them again and highly recommend them to anyone looking for interior or exterior work!"
"The gutter cleaning was very good, but they left the mess from gutters all over patio, deck, and deck furniture. Previous cleaners have cleaned up/removed gutter contents."
"We chose not to go with Field of Dream Siding and Construction for our roofing job because when he showed up to take measurements, he didn't even get on the roof to look around. He didn't even go in the back of the house where he would have seen that there was a skylight he'd have to work around. All the other contractors who came to take measurements in order to make a bid, got on the roof and looked around. His bid was in the mid-range, so it wasn't bad, but I'm not sure what it was based on."
"I hired Greg to perform multiple projects in and outside of my house. Greg does excellent work and projects I had Greg fix was a leaking chimney with multiple areas surrounding the chimney which leaked into my living room and closet. Chimney was replaced and fixtures and sealing were done to fix the leak. His work is perfection. This was a huge issue resolved with. There are many other projects which Greg fixed which include, however, not limited to some electrical outlet work and replacement, repaired a leaking faucet which leaked into my family room ceiling, repair of ceiling from leaks into family room. Outside of my house Greg fixed the overhang below the gutters which had come apart by wear and tear of the weather over the years. My drapes in my living room were replaced with blinds. Again excellent excellent work performed. I highly recommend Greg to do any projects needed in and outside of my house. He is very precise in all of his work performed. Greg is very professional and pleasant to have him do any of my projects and would highly recommend him for any issues a person would have. In a heartbeat I will have Greg repair any problems I have in the future. Greg was a gem I found who does pretty much everything. Today you have to hire big companies who do one project and then you have to find another big company to fix the other things and so it goes. Greg can do anything and does it in a timely manner. You just don't find an individual who does superb work in all areas of issues a person may need help with. He does an excellent job."

The problems with composite decking include a high rate of expansion and contraction from temperature swings. This characteristic can cause boards to split, delaminate, or peel. In addition, significant movement can cause shrinking, warping, twisting, and bending. For this reason, you should minimize moisture and ensure proper airflow below your deck.
When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.
The proper and most comfortable height for a deck stair riser, also called a step, is between four and seven inches. A height of seven inches is often considered ideal for a strain-free step that minimizes the risk of trips and falls. While it is possible to have risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. For optimal safety and comfort, pair a seven-inch riser with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. Always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements that differ from these general recommendations.
Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
