"The staff seem to be really good and professional people. The reason for my 2-star rating is that the work done simply didn't deliver on expectations of durability. There are sections of my driveway where nearly all of the seal coating came off in less than 9 months, so I am going to have to re-do the job myself. This is not what I had in mind when I paid over $1,100 (a fair price, if it would have lasted longer). I understand that the work isn't covered anymore, as I didn't report it until the thaw revealed so much was missing, and I'm not upset with Merit or their staff. "We had a concrete slab poured on June 29, 2024, and immediately noticed pitting and poor finishing. The crew returned to sand the surface and apply a new sealer, but this left grooves, divots, and patched areas. Within a year, the sealer is already flaking and peeling, despite being assured a high-quality product was used. The peeling is most noticeable where our truck is parked, even though the garage has seen very limited use. We repeatedly requested an inspection and solution. A scheduled meeting was missed without notice, and multiple follow-up attempts have gone unanswered. This lack of communication is extremely unprofessional. Due to the poor workmanship, lack of response, and unwillingness to resolve issues, I would not recommend this company and will not be giving them my business again."

However, the durability depends on the climate, base material and thickness, and thickness of the concrete or asphalt used. The standard thickness for a concrete driveway is four inches for an area that holds cars and pickup trucks. Plan to pour concrete five inches thick for driveways that need to accommodate large, heavy vehicles.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. However, it does get unpleasantly hot in the summer and requires more maintenance than concrete.

While stamped concrete can last up to 50 years on average, a driveway will likely need repairs or resurfacing within 25 years. Comparatively, the life span of a stamped concrete driveway is much longer than those built with pavers or asphalt, which will often crack or break down under the weight of your vehicle much sooner.

Concrete shrinkage cracks are very common and should be expected. Even professionals end up with shrinkage cracks on newly poured concrete slabs. Remember that these cracks are not harmful to the slab's strength, though some homeowners do prefer to fill in the cracks for aesthetics. When installing concrete, you can avoid ample concrete shrinkage cracks by avoiding hot, sunny, or windy days.
