Customers say: Quick response

"If you are looking for a painter who's work exceeds expectations, then look no further and hire Joe Germain with Signature Painting. Joe not only painted every interior room in my home, but he took down wall paper, painted exterior doors, did texturing in my kitchen, moved my door bell and patched up the wall, and so much more. He is a perfectionist and his work exemplifies this. He is professional, courteous, on-time, returns all calls, cleans up, kind, etc. I could keep going. Never in my wildest dream did I think I would be WOWED the way that I am. The compliments I get on all the work he did not only from my friends and family but from other CONTRACTORS that came in my house to do work are overwhelming! The Contractors even asked who did the work and they want Joe to work for them!! Joe, if you read this, I cannot THANK YOU enough! You are amazing! I cannot wait to hire you again!!"

"I called after 5 and left a message, so I figured I wouldn't hear from them until the next day. I was impressed when someone was at my door by 6 that same evening to give me a quote. They removed the tree the next day. Couldn't ask for better service then that."

"Absolutely the best place to use. I don't think anyone else could have done the work they did in the amount of time. We had huge cracks in our walls from settling and previous poor repairs before we bought the home. I am beyond pleased with the work they did."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Manufacturers use a different process and formula for exterior paint versus interior. The exterior formula has to withstand elements like temperature, UV lighting, moisture, wind, and debris. Interior paint doesn’t need to be as tough, only exposed to dust, scratches, dents, scuff marks, and the like.

Regular staining, sealing, and inspecting for rot or insect damage prolongs fence lifespan.

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.
