"All went well. My call was returned promptly. Owner came out and assessed problem. Explained clearly what the scope of their work would be. Provided me with recommendations of contractors to complete uncovered aspects of the job (drywall, plumbing). "Overall very well! Sean was personable, punctual, and very efficient. I would certainly recommend him. Only minor issue was one cabinet door rubbed against the frame when closed due to multiple layers of thick paint. Sean warned us not to close the door for two days to let the paint dry to try and avoid chipping, but it still chipped anyway when we closed it a couple days later, so we just sanded it down and plan to touch up the frame. Other than that everything looks great."

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.
