I am a general contractor with 22 years of experience. I don't just do it all I do it all WELL, and I take my time to make sure that the customer is happy with the end result. I generally work on a half down, half when the job is completed basis, but I will look at each situation individually and determine what is fair to the customer.

"RUN! RUN FAST!!! TWO FLOORS FAILED ON BRAND NEW LAKE HOME IN less than 3 years and ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY. One of the worst displays of quality and customer service I’ve ever experienced in my life. The flooring I purchased from Josh that was sold as HIGH END was literally $1000.00 less on Wayfair. Literally 100% same product and amount delivered for $1000.00 cheaper. MAKE SURE TO LOOK AT WAYFAIR BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH ANY ORDER. After 3 years on a brand new construction home, I have had two failed floors sold and installed by DK. It has been a nightmare to say the least. 4 inspections all saying DK was responsible. Josh did finally agree to replace the first floor but literally was in a screaming match with him in my kitchen because he was not willing to show any inspection results. Literally had no floor for 3 months. Seriously down to the wood! 13 months later issues AGAIN! Two more inspections- both showing DK was responsible and Josh will take zero accountability. Continues to not share any inspection results (WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?!?!) One of the worst decisions I’ve made in my life was choosing DK to be a part of my home build. Run, and run fast! There are much better options out there!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Custom closets cost around $2,100 on average, but you could pay anywhere from $500 up to $6,000 or more for your custom design. The scope of your design services will be the most significant factor, with standalone designs being the most affordable and design and construction services costing toward the higher end of the price range. Most closet design services include a closet and construction plan.

  • Custom reach-in closet: $500–$1,500

  • Custom walk-in closet: $750–$5,000

  • High-end walk-in closet: $2,000–$5,000+

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.
