Pavers are a type of permeable hardscape that can be used for driveways, patios, walkways, and other landscaping features. Unlike poured concrete or asphalt, pavers typically have a layer of gravel underneath to prevent water runoff from damaging your property—though you can also lay pavers on grass. The best material to put between pavers is polymeric sand. This sand contains silica and quartz, making it more durable than coarse or regular sand. It hardens after installation, so your pavers stay in place. Best of all, polymeric sand prevents weed growth in the gaps between pavers. You’ll have less maintenance to deal with once spring rolls around.

If installed correctly, interlocking pavers can last up to 50 years. The lifetime of your paver patio greatly depends on one thing: its foundation. If you rush through this step or cheap out on materials, your patio’s lifetime will be significantly cut short. Hire a pro if you’re not 100% sure you can pull this off.

You can use regular sand as the base for your pavers and in between pavers to seal the joints. Many pros reach for polymeric sand, also known as all-purpose sand, because it has been sifted and washed to remove impurities. Polyurethane will expand and contract with temperature changes, which will help keep the pavers firmly in place throughout the year. It’s also strong enough to stand up to foot traffic. You’ll use polymeric sand between the non-border pavers to keep them in place and prevent shifting.
