Basement toilets often sit below the home’s main sewage system, and installing a sewage ejector pump pushes the wastewater and sewage up to the main sewer line. Alternatively, you can use an upflush or macerator toilet that breaks down the waste and pushes it straight to the main sewer line rather than via a sewer line from the bathroom.

For easy-to-access pipes, your plumber will shut off the main water line and replace the pipes without demolishing your property. Underground or difficult-to-access pipes require different approaches. There are two ways to replace underground cast iron pipes: trench and trenchless sewer line replacements. Trenchless replacements result in minimal damage to your yard and involve bursting pipes and replacing them with new ones via an access point.

A plumber or certified gas technician is responsible for capping gas lines. Gas lines require expertise and understanding of safety standards to ensure it’s properly sealed. Your local regulations may also have specific requirements for capping gas lines.

The best way to unclog a bathtub drain is to pour a pot of boiled water down the drain, being careful not to splash yourself. However, take precautions, as boiling water can damage PVC pipes and joints. Follow up with ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a small sink plunger and let it sit for 15 minutes. Pour boiling water down the drain again and replace the drain stopper.
