"The first mold contractor I contacted, the tech quoted me $8k for the basement, then got a whopping $12K written estimate from the company. Immediately signed up on Angie's List and called first 2 companies on the List.  MasterCat was first and no wonder why.  Both companies offered to analyze the written estimate.  Donny at Mastercat gave me a detailed breakdown.  He was honest, yet respectful of other companies.  He suggested the original $8k to be more reasonable.  When he got to the house, the home was drenched in humidity and he gave me the option to do the ENTIRE home for not much more than the $12k originally quoted by the first company for just the basement.  Plus Mastercat includes services that the other companies would have me contact a 3rd party contractor for:  duct cleaning, furnace cleaning, and air quality testing.  Because this was a neglected foreclosure, when Donny was done with the house, it was like brand new:  the tile in the foyer and mudroom was a sparkling original light color, no cobwebs in corners, baseboards scrubbed, even the dust and grime of 9 years of neglect on top of the kitchen cabinets were cleaned.  They went above and beyond what you would expect from any contractor even beyond their industry.  They packed up my extra store-bought de-humidifiers, they placed personal belongings neatly in a cabinet, they even cleaned out the grime in the garage that was causing a nasty odor.  Master cat saved me money on maid service and tile cleaning! And all this was scheduled on an urgent basis and Donny was able to start work even sooner than promised.  He tried to save me money when he could without sacrificing the thoroughness of the remediation.  I NEVER have the time to write reviews on any sort of website, but Mastercat deserves the recognition.  Highly recommend!"

"We have a brick front porch that we had someone repair earlier this year because some of the brick had come loose.  After it was fixed, it was brought to our attention that the problem would happen again the porch was exposed to the elements (rain wearing away the mortar, then ice forming in the joints to loosen bricks).  To avoid this problem again in the future, we opted to have an overhang (roof) build over the porch.
After some research on Angie's List as well as the Better Business Bureau, I contacted two different contractors to get estimates (HS Remodeling and one other).  The owners from both companies came to do the estimate and were very professional.  They also understood exactly what I wanted.  The estimate from H S Remodeling ended up being about a third of the other one, so I opted to go with them.
Mr. Herrmann was very nice to work with.  He was always courteous and open to suggestions on the design for the project.  I was able to provide him with photo examples of what we wanted, and he was able to put a design together based on that.
The work was done by two other individuals (likely sub-contractors), but Mr. Herrmann checked on their progress regularly and was always a phone call away.  The project might have been able to be done a week or two earlier, but the availability of the two other individuals caused some delay... although it wasn't an issue for me.
When they were done, there were a couple things that I had to have them correct: some joints had gaps and the molding around the base of the columns stuck out beyond the edge of the porch.  To correct the gaps issue, they caulked where the roof met the side of the house, which looks fine.  Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do about the molding at that point because the columns ended up being too close to the edge of the porch.  My guess is that if they would've caught the problem early on, they might have been able to do something about it.  I ended up just having them remove the molding, which didn't affect the appearance too much.
Overall we are satisfied with the work that they did.  The project looks very close to the photo I provided and seems solidly built.
The issue with the columns was unfortunate.  I'm not sure if that problem would have been avoided if I went with the other contractor, but I do know that I don't feel that it is something I consider worth three times more money."
