We have a brick front porch that we had someone repair earlier this year because some of the brick had come loose. After it was fixed, it was brought to our attention that the problem would happen again the porch was exposed to the elements (rain wearing away the mortar, then ice forming in the joints to loosen bricks). To avoid this problem again in the future, we opted to have an overhang (roof) build over the porch. After some research on Angie's List as well as the Better Business Bureau, I contacted two different contractors to get estimates (HS Remodeling and one other). The owners from both companies came to do the estimate and were very professional. They also understood exactly what I wanted. The estimate from H S Remodeling ended up being about a third of the other one, so I opted to go with them. Mr. Herrmann was very nice to work with. He was always courteous and open to suggestions on the design for the project. I was able to provide him with photo examples of what we wanted, and he was able to put a design together based on that. The work was done by two other individuals (likely sub-contractors), but Mr. Herrmann checked on their progress regularly and was always a phone call away. The project might have been able to be done a week or two earlier, but the availability of the two other individuals caused some delay... although it wasn't an issue for me. When they were done, there were a couple things that I had to have them correct: some joints had gaps and the molding around the base of the columns stuck out beyond the edge of the porch. To correct the gaps issue, they caulked where the roof met the side of the house, which looks fine. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do about the molding at that point because the columns ended up being too close to the edge of the porch. My guess is that if they would've caught the problem early on, they might have been able to do something about it. I ended up just having them remove the molding, which didn't affect the appearance too much. Overall we are satisfied with the work that they did. The project looks very close to the photo I provided and seems solidly built. The issue with the columns was unfortunate. I'm not sure if that problem would have been avoided if I went with the other contractor, but I do know that I don't feel that it is something I consider worth three times more money.

It went very well. The job began on time and ended on time. We were pleased with it.
