"I woke up to find water damage on the ceiling in two different rooms.  This was the first winter since we bought the house where enough snow could cause ice dams to build up.  I hadn't been doing a good job of shoveling my roof, and the ice buildup was pretty substantial.  I got on to Angie's List and found Blue Hills Roofing as the top reviewed company.  It was a Saturday at 10am, so I figured that I'd just call and leave a message and hope that they could come Monday.  Steve, the owner, picked up the phone and said that he could have his foreman out there today!  Matt (the foreman) and a co-worker arrived that afternoon, and removed all snow and ice from my roof in about 90 minutes.  I was extremely impressed with their professionalism (in person and on the phone), and how quickly they arrived and got the job done.
I'll definitely be using these guys for *any* roofing job in the future.  I was extremely impressed.

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

When starting the engine, you typically leave the choke on a snowblower in the "choke" or "closed" position. After starting, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Then, gradually open the choke, moving it to the "open" or "run" position, allowing more air into the engine and transitioning to a normal fuel-air mixture. The exact duration varies based on the snowblower model and ambient temperature, but as a general rule, you should open the choke once the engine has stabilized and runs smoothly, typically within a few minutes.

While it is possible to remove snow from your roof without a professional, we don’t recommend it. Accessing your roof can be a dangerous task; pair that with slippery ice and snow that can be heavy to move, and you have a very risky problem on your hands. This dangerous situation becomes more high-risk when there’s a snowstorm or your roof has a steep pitch. To ensure that everyone stays safe, be sure to call a roof snow removal specialist to complete this job with the proper tools and equipment.

Snowblowers are some of the best tools for snow removal because they remove large amounts of snow quickly without bodily harm or damaging your deck. If your snowblower can fit on your deck, it’s a good first line of defense to remove snow quickly and easily. If you don’t have a snowblower, a plastic shovel with a rubber blade is another good choice to remove snow on a deck.

While it’s less common than on other kinds of roofs, yes, ice dams can form on metal roofs. Metal roofs, particularly those with snow guards installed, can still accumulate ice at the roof edge, although ice dams on metal roofs are less likely to cause roof or interior damage than on traditional asphalt shingle roofs.

If you’re struggling to find anything else suitable in your cupboards, a vinegar and water ice melt makes for a passable quick fix. Just don’t expect it to clear your concrete the way commercial products or rock salt will. Mix equal parts vinegar and warm water and squeegee away the watery slush to prevent more slippery surfaces from forming.
