"I'm late getting this review in, as the work was done on August 7th, but I still want to say how impressed I am with your professionalism and speed. The whole crew came in with trucks and a shredder, and they performed their duties like an assembly line. Each man had a job to do and they tackled it. I was very impressed with the guy in the bucket who moved himself around the tree to cut the branches! He was up there pretty high. They all did a great job on our tree and we've had several people comment on how nice it looks. Thanks guys!"

"We had three trees removed from our property. Two, 60ft cedar trees were 20 feet from the house, and one large birch that was on located a hillside surrounded by mature pines and cedars. The crew from Dave's Tree Service arrived promptly, confirmed the trees to be removed, and safely navigated the equipment and removal of limbs near the house and power lines. They also asked what size limbs to leave behind that we would use for firewood, along with logs cut to firewood length. They were professional and courteous, and even asked if we wanted help stacking the cut logs for drying. They raked up the brush and wood chips, leaving the wooded area cleaner than when they arrived. Considering the challenge of removing the trees close to the house and the multiple equipment set-ups required to do so safely, the price was very reasonable."

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit. 

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.

The safest way to cut down a tree is to make sure you’re completely prepared and have done all the necessary safety checks, including double-checking your equipment is in good working order, you have plenty of clearance to fell the tree, you’re wearing all the safety gear, and you have a partner to help you (who should also be wearing safety gear). 

Pruning can impact cold hardiness—but it’s less about the exact temperature and more about temperature variation. Generally, you don’t want to prune trees when there’s a risk of temperatures suddenly dropping from 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below. A tree is most sensitive until 48 hours after it’s pruned.

A dead tree should always be cut down, because it could fall and cause injuries or damage, and it can also attract insects like carpenter ants. A tree that’s diseased beyond repair should also be cut down, but it’s not always easy for a homeowner to tell. Signs of disease include dying branches, a hollow trunk, leaning, and discolored or missing leaves, but your best bet is to hire a local arborist who can evaluate the tree and tell you if it can be saved or should be cut down.

Tree roots don’t necessarily break through concrete on their own, but they can certainly take advantage of existing cracks, even very small ones. As roots grow, they expand the cracks, making them larger and leading to serious and costly foundation damage. It’s a good idea to have repairs on any foundation cracks you’re concerned about.
